The bluesSHOUT! name was inspired by the Ring Shout, an historical African American spiritual circle dance that was full of joy, camaraderie, improvisation, and creative expression through movement.
This year we have removed the auditions process. This may seem like we’re making it easier on you, but in fact, this is just a different sort of challenge. How well do you know yourself as a dancer and a learner? Can you bring your own self-awareness and humility to the classroom? Can you be a good partner, collaborator, and co-creator with anyone? We will have ‘spiciness’ ratings on each class to describe the intensity and pace to expect.
1. We highly value effective teaching in our community. By extending the teacher training workshop to an entire track, we will give attendees more time to learn, process, and integrate their skills in a practical setting.
2. We hope this will make it possible for more people to participate, even if they have more restrictive travel schedules.
We aim to encourage our students and the general blues dancer population to push themselves to become the best they can ever be, so why would we not ask the same of our teachers and master dancers? Encouraging them to compete gives them the chance to create under pressure, just like any other competitor. This leads to greater inspiration for everyone!
This year, we really want to focus our competitions on two things: Partnership and Musicality. For this reason, we will only be having Strictly style competitions at the Open and All Star levels. The Newcomer will remain a mix and match style competition, and the solo cuttin' competition will remain the same.
We have seen idiom dances in our competitions for years, and we are looking forward to more of the same. Lots of dancers have done Struttin' and Savoy Walk on our competition floor, to wild applause. We will not be giving idiom expectations in our competitions this year. We leave it in the hands of the competitor to choose the best fit for the music. Our knowledge as a community is expanding so quickly, that we're sure it's going to be our most impressive year yet!
Pass winners will be sent an email with information on how to register two weeks before registration goes live in January!
